JESS

While Lizzy and Nathan went to put together some breakfast, I decided I should take a look outside. If I looked out the front door, I’d have some protection from the porch roof. I opened the door a few inches and peeked out. The wind wasn’t blowing at me, so I opened it wider.

The rain was still falling hard, and the wind was strong. But what concerned me was the water covering the ground. The storm surge had surrounded the inn, and the water was about a foot below the porch. This meant the inn would take on water if it got a foot deeper.

I looked over my shoulder. “Lizzy. Come take a look at this.”

She came out of the kitchen with Nathan right behind her. “What is it?”

“The surge.”

She looked out the door and gasped. “Are we going to flood?”

Nathan squeezed in between us and looked out the door. “Yippee!”

Lizzy patted his head. “It’s not a good thing, honey.” I closed the door, and she looked at me. “What can we do?”

“Do you have anything inside we can use to put in front of the doors? This one and the kitchen one?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. There are some big burlap sacks full of rice and beans in the pantry.”

I headed for the kitchen. “How big?”

“Fifty pounds. I have no idea what Grandma was planning on doing with them. They were here when I moved in.”

She followed me to the pantry, and I turned on my flashlight. In the back corner were two fifty-pound bags of pinto beans and one of rice. “Well, it’s not sand, but it might work. It’ll at least slow it down.” I handed the flashlight to Nathan. “Hold this for me, kiddo.”

Nathan took the light, and I picked up one of the bags of beans and dropped it in front of the kitchen door. It didn’t cover the space under the door entirely.

“We’ll need to find something else to fill the gap.” I picked up the other bag with a grunt and threw it over my shoulder, then headed for the living room. I set it in front of the door, then went to get the rice. Between the two bags, the front door was pretty secure.

When I returned to the kitchen, Lizzy was filling an empty burlap sack with rice, beans, and pasta from the pantry. By the time she poured in two bags of flour, it was full enough to cover the rest of the kitchen door.

I took it from her. “Good thinking.”

“I’m not totally useless.”

“Never thought you were.” I looked at our handiwork. “I wish there was a way to keep an eye on the level.”

“Come sit and eat. Nathan and I toasted some bagels over the camp stove. And I made coffee.”

I went to the table to sit, and Nathan sat next to me. “Can we play hide and seek again?”

“Hmm. That didn’t work out so well last night. We should think of something different to play.”

“Okay. I’ll think about it.
